Research Bibliography
This selected bibliography brings together fifteen Chinese-language studies checked against copies available to the editorial project. It includes three master's theses and twelve journal articles. The translated titles and romanizations are search aids, not official translations. Original titles appear with each entry so a library can identify the text without relying on its English rendering.
Start with the definition, music guide or learning resources if you are new to the subject. For research, choose an entry by its question and check the original passage before citing a finding. A bibliography entry confirms a source record; it does not endorse every claim in that source.
Theses: history and transmission
Yang Na: regional history, 2013
The history and development of Manhan Opera in the Baotou region · 包头地区漫瀚剧的历史与发展研究 · Baotou diqu Manhanju de lishi yu fazhan yanjiu
Reference: Yang Na. Master's thesis, Inner Mongolia Normal University, 2013. The reviewed copy's cover is dated June 6, 2013; the PDF contains 57 pages, including preliminary matter.
A substantial starting point for historical development and the relationship between the genre and its local performing context. Its account belongs to the period studied. Use a specific printed page when citing it; the PDF page number differs because of the front matter. The cover date does not establish a degree-award date.
Gu Xiaoyang: the 1982-2018 period, 2019 copy
An investigation into the state of Manhan Opera, a local theatre form of Inner Mongolia (1982-2018) · 内蒙古本土戏曲——漫瀚剧的生存现状调查与研究(1982-2018) · Nei Menggu bentu xiqu: Manhanju de shengcun xianzhuang diaocha yu yanjiu (1982-2018)
Reference: Gu Xiaoyang. Master's thesis, Shanghai Theatre Academy. The reviewed copy's cover is dated April 8, 2019; the PDF contains 49 pages.
Useful for following a study framed around the genre's survival and development from 1982 to 2018. The Academy's 2019 defence notice independently lists the author and title. A later research survey cites the thesis as 2020; we retain the date on the copy examined rather than silently merging versions. Neither a cover nor a defence listing proves the degree was awarded.
Li Yebin: a training cohort, 2022
Transmission and development of Manhan Opera in twenty-first-century Baotou: the 2016 training cohort · 21世纪包头漫瀚剧传承与发展研究——以2016级漫瀚剧传承班为例 · 21 shiji Baotou Manhanju chuancheng yu fazhan yanjiu: yi 2016 ji Manhanju chuancheng ban wei li
Reference: Li Yebin. Master's thesis, Inner Mongolia Normal University, June 2022. The reviewed PDF contains 58 pages.
The complete title identifies the 2016 Manhan Opera training cohort as its case. It offers a route into questions about teaching, learning and transmission. Its evidence concerns that cohort and research period; it is not a current enrolment announcement or a survey of every training programme. Student identifiers, signatures and private interview details are excluded here.
Music, performance and cultural interaction
Li Jianjun: how singing music is constructed
Construction and analysis of Manhan Opera singing music from a deconstructionist perspective · 解构主义视域下漫瀚剧唱腔音乐的建构与分析 · Jiegou zhuyi shiyu xia Manhanju changqiang yinyue de jiangou yu fenxi
Reference: Li Jianjun. Minzu Yishu Yanjiu, 2020, no. 4, pp. 118-129. DOI: 10.14003/j.cnki.mzysyj.2020.04.14.
Examines the relationship between inherited er ren tai material, rearrangement and new composition through musical examples. Pages 120-121 discuss musical organization; pages 124-128 develop work-specific comparisons. Read these as an author's analytical framework, not a fixed rule for every production. This page does not reproduce the scores.
Lin Ying and Dong Bo: an integrative perspective
Research on the integrative development of Manhan Opera · 漫瀚剧的融合性发展研究 · Manhanju de ronghexing fazhan yanjiu
Reference: Lin Ying and Dong Bo. Zhongguo Xiju, 2022, no. 2, pp. 92-94.
Both authors are credited in the source. They consider cultural interaction through dramatic subjects and musical construction. Pages 93-94 are useful for comparing themes across works. The article's chronology needs comparison with other records; its account of an early meeting is not used here as a definitive administrative date.
An Qile: a map of the research literature
An overview of research on Manhan Opera music · 漫瀚剧戏曲音乐研究成果概述 · Manhanju xiqu yinyue yanjiu chengguo gaishu
Reference: An Qile. Xiju Zhi Jia, 2023, no. 9, pp. 41-43.
Surveys research from meetings and reviews to musical collections, work studies and interdisciplinary approaches. Follow its bibliography to locate further originals. A citation in this survey does not mean this website has examined the cited book. Its main text and reference list give different years for a musical collection, so an edition must be checked against the book itself.
Wang Nan: piano and stylistic interpretation
Cultural interpretation of piano works in a Manhan Opera style · 浅析钢琴漫瀚剧风格作品中的文化解读 · Qianxi gangqin Manhanju fengge zuopin zhong de wenhua jiedu
Reference: Wang Nan. Beifang Yinyue, 2020, no. 18, pp. 237-238.
An entry into writing about piano works associated with a Manhan Opera style and their cultural interpretation. It should not be used to claim that piano belongs to every traditional ensemble. A stylistic discussion also provides no permission to reproduce a score, performance or recording.
Works and the genre's development
Jiang Xiaofang: several works in comparison
A new theatre form across ethnic traditions: observations on the growth of Manhan Opera · 跨民族新剧种——漫瀚剧的成长观察 · Kua minzu xin juzhong: Manhanju de chengzhang guancha
Reference: Jiang Xiaofang. Zhongguo Xiju, 2020, no. 8, pp. 73-74.
Discusses The Legend of Fengzhoutan, Qidan Nü, Tianzhi, Caoyuan Ama and Buyi Junshou. The article provides a compact route from historical subjects to contemporary-life drama and compares storytelling and performance choices. It is a critical selection, not a complete repertoire, production chronology or list of credits. Its photographs are not reproduced here.
Wang Lei, part one: The Legend of Fengzhoutan
Manhan Opera and Mongolian-Han cultural interaction, part one: from er ren tai to The Legend of Fengzhoutan · 蒙汉文化交融下的漫瀚剧时代发展分析(上)——从二人台艺术到漫瀚剧《丰州滩传奇》戏曲导向 · Meng Han wenhua jiaorong xia de Manhanju shidai fazhan fenxi (shang): cong er rentai yishu dao Manhanju Fengzhoutan chuanqi xiqu daoxiang
Reference: Wang Lei. Yishu Pingjian, 2021, no. 9, pp. 155-159.
Connects discussion of er ren tai with the development of The Legend of Fengzhoutan. Read it alongside the work profile and Li Jianjun's analysis to distinguish a genre's musical foundation from one writer's interpretation. Institutional dates and absolute claims require their own supporting records.
Wang Lei, part two: Fengxianglou
Manhan Opera and Mongolian-Han cultural interaction, part two: drama and music in Fengxianglou · 蒙汉文化交融下的漫瀚剧时代发展分析(下)——从《凤祥楼》谈漫瀚剧戏剧、音乐导向 · Meng Han wenhua jiaorong xia de Manhanju shidai fazhan fenxi (xia): cong Fengxianglou tan Manhanju xiju, yinyue daoxiang
Reference: Wang Lei. Yishu Pingjian, 2021, no. 10, pp. 152-156.
A separate article about dramatic and musical choices in Fengxianglou. Pages 153-154 discuss the restaurant setting, character development and the combination of inherited material with other theatrical techniques. Plot description is not a verified biography of the historical people involved; a production discussed in the article cannot stand for every version.
Cui Xiangdong: Buyi Junshou
Commitment, continuity and innovation: a review of Buyi Junshou · 丹心赤诚,守正创新——评漫瀚剧《布衣郡守》 · Danxin chicheng, shouzheng chuangxin: ping Manhanju Buyi junshou
Reference: Cui Xiangdong. Xiju Zhi Jia, 2023, no. 1, pp. 51-53.
A review by an author identified with Baotou Arts Theater. Page 52 describes the story, retrospective structure and musical choices. This relationship matters when interpreting the review. Its funding-year statement differs from the Ministry's 2016 project-list announcement; the announcement establishes inclusion in that list, not payment, completion or an award.
Yang Zinan: transmission and development
An inquiry into the transmission and development of Manhan Opera in Baotou, Inner Mongolia · 内蒙古包头市漫瀚剧的传承与发展探究 · Nei Menggu Baotou Shi Manhanju de chuancheng yu fazhan tanjiu
Reference: Yang Zinan. 2023, no. 4, pp. 131-134. Article identifier: 1002-8900(2023)04-0131-04. The journal title remains unverified from the supplied extract.
Discusses fieldwork, interviews, audience questions and proposals for transmission. Locate the complete journal record before presenting the citation as complete. Survey observations need their sample and collection period; they should not become percentages describing today's population or evidence of this website's impact.
Teaching and general music education
Lü Zhongqiang: educational value
The importance of traditional and folk music in university general music education: Manhan Opera as an example · 民族民间音乐在高校通识音乐教育中的重要意义——以漫瀚剧为例 · Minzu minjian yinyue zai gaoxiao tongshi yinyue jiaoyu zhong de zhongyao yiyi: yi Manhanju wei li
Reference: Lü Zhongqiang. Beifang Yinyue, 2020, no. 18, pp. 220-221.
Discusses the place of traditional and folk music in university general education, using Manhan Opera as an example. It is useful for framing a teaching rationale. The article's proposals do not establish that this website's teaching activity has been tried or adopted by a university.
Lü Zhongqiang: goals, process and assessment
Issues in teaching traditional and folk music in university general music courses: Manhan Opera as an example · 以漫瀚剧为例谈民族民间音乐在高校音乐通识课程中进行教学时应注意的几点问题 · Yi Manhanju wei li tan minzu minjian yinyue zai gaoxiao yinyue tongshi kecheng zhong jinxing jiaoxue shi ying zhuyi de ji dian wenti

Considers differentiated learning goals, the teaching process and assessment for students with different musical backgrounds. Read it as a set of teaching arguments. It does not substitute for an observed classroom evaluation or establish a universally effective lesson design.
Adjacent form: Manhan tune and film
Hu Huijuan: an incomplete source record
Applications and innovation of Manhan tune in film and television music · 漫瀚调在影视音乐中的应用与创新 · Manhandiao zai yingshi yinyue zhong de yingyong yu chuangxin
Reference: Hu Huijuan. Supplied journal extract, pp. 71-72. Journal title, year and issue remain unverified.
Concerns Manhan tune and its use in audiovisual work, including a film bearing that name. It belongs here as an adjacent-form research lead. It is not evidence that the film is a Manhan Opera stage production or that the two art forms are interchangeable. Missing publication details have not been inferred from a PDF creation date.
Locating and using these sources
Search a library catalogue or scholarly index by the original title, author, journal and year together. A DOI is an identifier, not a guarantee of open full text; the two identifiers above were checked on the articles, while online access may vary. This website does not host the collected PDFs or grant reproduction rights.
For a research note, record the edition examined, printed page, relevant passage and what it can establish. A work's story, a scholar's interpretation and a dated institutional record answer different questions. Use the source policy and correction channel to suggest a precise improvement to this bibliography.
