Training and Transmission
How does a performer learn a regional opera form? Li Yebin's 2022 master's thesis offers one detailed case: a Manhan Opera cohort established in 2016 through cooperation between an arts school in Baotou and a professional theatre company. The study combines documentary material, fieldwork and interviews. It follows particular learners and rehearsals, rather than establishing a training system for every company. [1]

Transmission and development of Manhan Opera in twenty-first-century Baotou: the 2016 training cohort · 21世纪包头漫瀚剧传承与发展研究——以2016级漫瀚剧传承班为例 · 21 shiji Baotou Manhanju chuancheng yu fazhan yanjiu: yi 2016 ji Manhanju chuancheng ban wei li
This page uses the thesis's account of that cohort, especially its discussion of coursework and the 2020 - 21 rehearsal period. It is a historical research guide, not a current prospectus. The bibliography identifies the source and its publication details. A reference to school or theatre activity does not imply either institution endorses this website.
From school to company practice
Li describes a four-year plan: three years at school followed by a year of company practice (pp. 11, 14). That planned sequence must be distinguished from the course of events described later. The study records the cohort entering company practice in September 2020 and preparing The Legend of Fengzhoutan as a graduation production (pp. 22, 27). [1]
The thesis says the move into company practice was delayed, but does not establish a precise explanation. It would be misleading to fill that gap with an assumed cause. Nor does the account establish today's admissions, qualifications, employment arrangements or teaching calendar.
What students studied
The thesis reproduces timetable examples from the first semesters of 2017 - 18 and 2018 - 19, then describes three broad areas of study (pp. 23 - 25): [1]
- General education: subjects such as language, history and geography, alongside the specialist programme.
- Performance practice: basic physical skills, singing, spoken delivery, pronunciation, movement, folk dance and rehearsing a work.
- Music and theatre knowledge: theory, sight-singing and related theatrical subjects, intended to connect practical technique with an understanding of music and drama.
Li describes school teachers and experienced company performers sharing teaching responsibilities. Company performers contributed to areas including singing, spoken lines and repertoire rehearsal. Pronunciation teaching was connected to the programme's aim of using Mandarin in singing and dialogue. These are features of the programme as described, not a mandatory curriculum for every Manhan Opera production (p. 24). [1]
Learning through a whole work
The Fengzhoutan work profile introduces the drama's place in the repertoire. In Li's study, rehearsing it also connected basic training with character, narrative and ensemble work. The account describes physical practice, daytime rehearsals and reviewing problems afterwards. Performers associated with an earlier version returned to guide the learners (pp. 27 - 28). [1]
The teaching described extended beyond each learner's assigned part: students studied singing passages and movements for multiple roles. This makes a useful distinction between learning a single passage and understanding how parts fit within a larger work. The study describes a process, not an independently measured improvement in performance quality (p. 28). [1]
Recordings and personal guidance
Li discusses changes in learning media, including audio and video, alongside older forms of direct transmission (pp. 8 - 11). In the rehearsal case, learners used media to practise outside sessions, while instructors corrected character interpretation, singing, movement and musical timing in person (p. 28). [1]
These activities are complementary in the account. Access to a recording does not reproduce the corrections, responses and explanations of a rehearsal. It also does not grant permission to download, republish or adapt that recording. The paper's photographs, timetable tables and musical examples are not reproduced here.
Using this case for further study
Ask what a source actually documents: a proposed curriculum, a timetable from one semester, a researcher observing rehearsal, or an opinion about what training should achieve. Li also discusses limitations and makes recommendations; those recommendations are not proof that a method is universally effective. Our learning resources provide a separate introductory reading activity. This historical case does not establish classroom validation or institutional adoption of that activity.
